Help me fund my kickstarter and become a patron of the arts :-)

The short story in three sentences:

  1. I launched a kickstarter for the production of #TheLeftoverBride audiobook.
  2. And I offer rewards in exchange for your pledge to fund said-production (rewards include: an early electronic copy of the audiobook, your name in the credits, pick a name for a character, more audiobooks, chat with me about self-publishing and so so much more…).
  3. The project will only be funded if it reaches its goal and you can choose your reward (they start at $1 or even pledge whatever you’d like without a reward here).

The longer story:

“Patron of the arts” does sound good and this is basically what you’ll be doing by helping me fund my kickstarter for #TheLeftoverBride audiobook.

As per Wikipedia:

People who back Kickstarter projects are offered tangible rewards or experiences in exchange for their pledges. This model traces its roots to subscription model of arts patronage, where artists would go directly to their audiences to fund their work.

Kickstarter

There we go.

#TheLeftoverBride is a book I wrote not long after my autologous stem cell transplant as I needed a novel I could concentrate on that would make me smile. And a book that I hoped would make people smile.

This is the dedication of the book:

#The Leftover Bride book dedication

It seems it worked for many readers.

Those are some reviews the book has received:

  • “This book is so much fun! The perfect combination of romance, angst, and humor, itโ€™s your favorite Hallmark movieโ€™s sassier, steamier cousin.”
  • “Sweet, sassy and fun!”

An audiobook allows me to reach out to so many more people around the world. Maybe making them smile, too.

And by funding this project, you ensure that it can be made available to libraries as well as retailers. In addition, I can make the book available at a lower price around the world if this project is fully funded, than if it was made exclusive to only one distributor.

This book has characters who have been through a lot. Sorcha has OCD (wonder where I got the inspiration for that?). Ryan dealt with a tough childhood (that I’m lucky I had to research a lot as my experience differs from his) and thinking his career defines him (hmmm).

And an audiobook production requires investment up front for my wonderful and amazingly talented audiobook narrator.

Do you know the amount of work for one hour of finished audio (narrated, edited and mastered)?

It takes about 6 hours to produce one hour of finished audio: about two hours of narration and going through the audio to edit it (take away possible repetitions, mistakes, extraneous noises, clicks) and master it (ensuring the noise level is to the requirements. One also needs to re-listen to the finished file for quality control.

So, when you’re listening to an audiobook of about eight hours, it may have taken the narrator/producer about 48 hours to produce, not counting the breaks when you’re recording for your voice or for the way you sit or stand.

That also doesn’t take into consideration the pre-work that might be needed like reading the entire book before you record, making notes to make sure you keep the characters’ voice the same throughout and so much more…

When you hire a narrator/producer, you hire someone who can not only act and perform, you also hire someone who knows the intricacies of audiobook narration and production.

Once the audiobook is distributed, I receive between 10% and 40% of the price of audiobook (depending on the royalty share agreement, on the way a listener buys or borrows the audiobook, on the retailer).

With this payment structure, I might decide to put the audiobook available in places where my return on investment might be higher. It not only means the audiobook wouldn’t be available everywhere, but recouping said investment can still take quite a long time.

In addition, the narrator may also take a risk when they agree to a part of their return being royalty-share because what if the audiobook doesn’t do as well on the retailers? Not from any fault of their own, but maybe the marketing or advertising plan doesn’t work the way it could/should?

So… this would be how the project funding would be used:

  • First, the audiobook will be made available on a larger distribution platform, which would include libraries. Libraries can then purchase the audiobook at a much lower price;
  • $2000 for the audiobook narrator/producer: this would be an actual remuneration of $40 per hour for the work done. (This is the median hourly rate for an experienced audiobook narrator). This narrator has gone above and beyond for previous audiobooks which she had agreed to do via royalty-share (where she had reduced her rate per finished hour but, like me, ended up making a loss);
  • About $130 for Kickstarter fees;
  • About $130 in processing fees;
  • About $200 for shipping (including some international shipping);
  • About $70 in taxes;
  • About $20 for the platform enabling distribution of audiobooks electronically;
  • About $250 for ads once the audiobook is available worldwide;
  • And because I can dream, right? Anything above the goal would be split this way: half for the narrator and half for me.

By funding this project, you not only will help me make more people smile. It will make it easier for me to have the audiobook possibly available in libraries and in more countries around the world where people speak or learn English. But you will also enable me to accomplish other projects (such as more bilingual books and more actual writing…)

So, thank you, thank you, thank you SO MUCH! It means the world to me.

Risks and challenges

All the rewards are either already in production or will be as soon as the project is successfully funded. The only one is the short story reward. That reward might take me a bit more time to get more to, which is why the delivery is longer. When it comes to the short story, you’ll be able to give me names, tropes or story idea. There will be a survey to fill out. If the story idea is out of my competencies or a topic I do not write about, I will deliver a short story that might be slightly different but will still be exclusive.

Self-publishing reflection: planning and goals (Vella, novellas, marketing and more…) The Raccoon Author's Self-Publishing Diary

I almost titled this episode: "How to achieve your self-publishing goals without feeling overwhelmed." But dear Diary that would have been false advertisement as while I'm trying to adapt my systems and plans to fit my goals, I'm still in the process and it does feel overwhelming from times to times. Do I have coping mechanisms when it does so thatI can nmake sure that it also doesn't take away from my plan?. Yes, I do but still… I'm not yet at the "achieve your goals without feeling overwhelmed" stage. I am trying to get there. Joining Nina Lacour’s “Writing Together: An Hour Of Comfort” (Proceeds go to Everytown and Sandy Hook Promise.)

I have no words. Or I have too many words. My heart is and has been heavy. Buffalo and now Uvalde. In 10 days. And all the other countless tragedies in-between. And before so many other cities, so many other schools, so many other families hurt, so much hate and so much pain.

Parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, friends shopping… Children learning and laughing. Teachers dedicating their careers and many times their personal lives to the kids they’re teaching.

Gone. Killed. Murdered.

And I want to find ways to help. I want to do something.

On Sunday, May 29th, at 11 a.m. PST (2 p.m. EST), I am joining Nina Lacour’s Writing Together An Hour of Comfort. 100% of proceeds will go to Everytown and Sandy Hook Promise.

Let’s come together for an hour of guided writing exercises designed to offer comfort while deepening craft. My intention for this time is to remind ourselves of the sustaining force of creativity while raising money to aid two organizations that are doing vital work.

Make yourself a cup of tea, find a place to settle in that feels good to you, and join me for a quiet hour of writing together. I’ll give you a few prompts, we’ll share some images or sentences in the chat, and then we’ll leave (hopefully) more grounded and connected to ourselves.

In light of the recent gun violence in Buffalo and Uvalde, 100% of the proceeds will be split between Everytown and Sandy Hook Promise.

Nina Lacour’s Writing Together’s website

In addition to donating to Everytown and Sandy Hook Promise, I’m gaining more knowledge by downloading and watching Sharon McMahon deep dive on gun laws in the US. I’m also starting training next week to become a volunteer Crisis Counselor with Crisis Text Line.

I just need to something.

A self-published author's diary, kindle vella

My Kindle Vella story lost its crown…

My Kindle Vella story lost its crown. Yesterday, I was telling you all about the words every romance author wants to hear and today… well, it’s more about the ups and downs of self-publishing.

And in case you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about when I say that my Vella story lost its crown…

What is Kindle Vella?

Kindle Vella brings you stories released one short episode at a time, available on the web at http://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella and in the Kindle app. The first few episodes of every story are always free–after that, purchase Tokensย ย and redeem them to unlock episodes. The first few episodes of every story are always free — after that, readers can purchase Tokens and redeem them to unlock episodes. As readers, you can follow the stories you like to keep up with, give an episode a Thumbs up, and when you unlock episodes, you receive one Fave a week you can award to the story you’re enjoying most that week.

Adapted from: Introducing Kindle Vella – Amazon

One of the drawbacks is that it’s only available in the US right now (both for readers and for authors).

One of the upsides is that Amazon is currently awarding bonuses to writers who publish on the platform. But the system is not the most transparent.

All authors are eligible for a bonus based on customer activity such as redemption of free and paid Tokens, Faves, and Follows.

Source: KDP – Kindle Vella

My experience with Kindle Vella so far…

I started publishing on Kindle Vella under a pen name in March (“Why I decided to try Kindle Vella as a self-published author”) and I got a surprisingly high bonus, especially as I didn’t have a lot of episodes and not a whole lot of people were reading my story.

I do not know yet what my bonus will be for April 2022 as there’s always a delay between the month when the reads happen and the announcement of the bonus.

Near the 20th of each month, we’ll post the previous month’s bonus amount in yourย Kindle Vella Dashboard. We will pay your bonus with your total KDP payments approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the bonus was earned. For example, if you earned a bonus in July, it will be paid with your September payments.

Source: KDP – Kindle Vella

I am thoroughly enjoying writing serialized fiction. Publishing every week is fun for me. And having that schedule is giving me more consistency in the way I write. Plus, I think it’s helping me write in a different way: I’m raising the stakes faster, digging deep into the characters and I am definitely learning how to write very strong endings for each episodes.

And I love love love knowing people are reading my work. The thumbs up? The polls at the end of each episode? It’s a plus for me.

And you know what else was a plus?

Having one of my story with a crown…

I am currently publishing two stories under my pen name and one of them had a crown for three weeks. It took me totally by surprise and when the crown stayed days after days, week after week, I was stoked.

First, that means readers are loving the story. They only have one crown to give and they chose my story? Awwww!

I have no idea who reads my story (except maybe one wonderful reader who got the link from my newsletter). I do videos on TikTok (flip pages) and that’s it. Since it’s a pen name, I don’t post about in Kindle Vella Authors Readers groups. I don’t share the link on this website. I don’t talk about it on my other social media.

And yet… Yet, people who have never read my other books are finding them and giving them thumbs up and crowns?

For three weeks!!!

How many crowns? I have no idea because the Kindle Vella dashboard doesn’t show that info… (and yet it’s used in the calculation of the bonus. Hmmm).

Those crowns should help my May bonus (which I will only find out about next month).

But… today…. today, I checked to make sure the latest episode was published.

And the crown is gone!

I mean I know there are hundreds and hundreds of stories readers can choose from. And maybe they fell more in love with another story last week. Or maybe I didn’t release enough episodes. Or maybe the episode wasn’t their favorite ones.

I am thinking of releasing another episode tomorrow as I ended the last one on a pretty big cliffhanger.

And the latest episode is getting a lot of thumbs up, so I think the story is going in the right direction.

And who knows? Maybe releasing that episode on Sunday (or at the beginning of the week) might keep the story fresh in their mind as they decide on which story to give the crown to.

I’ll keep you updated.

Make sure you subscribe to my podcast: “A Self-Published Author’s Diary” to find out if I get a crown back. ๐Ÿ™‚ And about the bonus.

What every romance author wants to hear (and I heard it from an insurance agent)…

There are words romance authors love to hear.

No… not those words. Well, at least, not in this case.

I shared in my newsletter today a pretty eventful day from a couple of days ago. For the full story, click here.

Here’s the very short version.

As I was looking to switch car insurances, the insurance agent (who was very friendly and knowledgeable) went through a list of questions to see if he could match the new offer.

At some point in the process, he asked “So what’s your job title?”

I replied, “Author.”

And he followed up with: “Oh, what do you write?”

“Romance novels.”

There was one of those long pauses… you know the type. The ones that could go in so many directions and thousands of answers flashed in my mind.

Sometimes, let’s just say, romance novels are seen as “lesser-than.”

And his response caught me off guard.

He said…. are you ready for this?

“Oh wow, youโ€™re spreading happiness around the world. Thatโ€™s awesome.โ€

His words were just the pick-me-up I needed. And who knows, maybe his words will have the same effect on someone else. After all, a little bit of happiness can go a long way…

And whatever you’re doing, you might be spreading a bit of happiness around you, too.

And if you’re looking for your next romance novel: one-click #TheLeftoverBride (A Hallmark-worthy romance with a little extra steam) and start reading now…

Or pre-order #SweetsForLove and make this romance author even happier. :-)

Author Branding, Self-Publishing & Why Iโ€™m the Raccoon Author The Raccoon Author's Self-Publishing Diary

What exactly is a Raccoon Author, and what does that have to do with author branding?In this episode of The Raccoon Authorโ€™s Self-Publishing Diary, Iโ€™m reintroducing myself, talking about how I think about branding as an indie author, and why the raccoon has somehow become part of mine.Iโ€™m also sharing where the raccoon idea came from, how it connects to the way I write and work, and why branding doesnโ€™t have to mean squeezing yourself into one tiny, perfectly polished box.Plus: my Gallup Strengths, Achiever energy, multiple pen names, too many projects, manuscript bloopers, dictation, an Instagram Reel that got 145 views and no love, and ten dictated chapters in one weekend.Basically: author branding, creative chaos, self-publishing, and a lot of raccoon energy.Links & things I mentionedSupport The Raccoon Author on Patreon โ€” including the Raccoon Author tier and the Emotional Support Crew.Preorder Cancer Is Not My Brand โ€” the nonfiction book Iโ€™m currently revising and, appropriately enough, the book that got me thinking even more about branding, identity, and what we choose to be known for.Iโ€™ve learned a LOT from Becca Syme and the Better-Faster Academy. Are you ready to set foot into Gavert City, the small Texan town with a history of mysterious disappearances and murders and cults where falling in love almost seems dangerous?

Those three stories filled with tension and twists will keep you up at night and may break your heart before piecing it back together.

Included in this box set:

Fear Me, Fear Me Notย (Erin and Dimitri’s story)

A serial killer has been terrorizing Gavert City for years…what if it’s my father? My forever crush Dimitri may try to protect me, but he can’t protect me from the truth. Hereโ€™s what we all know: Sometime this week or the next or the one after that, we will find another dead girl. Every year, a girl disappears, and every year, sheโ€™s found dead with an angel wing carved into her cheek. And this year is no different. Another girl disappeared.

“I have seen this book being described as “Scream” meets “Friday Night Lights” and I absolutely agree! I’m a fan of both and found this book to be amazing! This book has everything! Suspenseful, romantic, and just all-around amazing! Kept me glued to my Kindle and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good thrill!!”ย

See Me, See Me Notย (Tessa and Luke’s story)

My sister disappeared years ago…but her body was never found. My mom wants to believe she’s still alive. I’m not sure what to believe. I know that I miss her. I know that I feel responsible…I’m the reason she disappeared. And I’m not the only one with secrets. My childhood crush, Luke, is back in town, and there’s a darkness to him that wasn’t there before. He’s hiding something, but when he finally tells me he escaped a dangerous cult, will we be able to help each other heal or will our pasts come back to crush us?

Once again, Elodie Nowodazkij weaves together a gripping story. Emotional and suspenseful…

Trust Me, Trust Me Notย (Lacey and Hunter’s story)

I may have jumped from a building engulfed in flames. I may have thought I was ready to start college after living secluded in my stepfather’s dangerous cult. I may have believed I was finally safe. I was wrong. Can Hunter, the firefighter who saved my life, help me move on? Or will danger always lurk around us?

Thrilling, yet touching, story of two amazing but broken characters…

Episode 58

I am back from holidays. A bit jetlagged. Very grateful for the time spent with loved ones in Germany and in France and getting back into a writing routine (and podcasting routine).

For the first time, I recorded this episode live on TikTok (before editing it for the podcast). Today, I talk about writing using the Pomodoro method again, my Kindle Vella bonus (more than I expected). Plus, I share an excerpt of the audiobook of Trust Me, Trust Me More and more…

New audiobooks: Trust Me, Trust Me Not and the Gavert City boxset…

My, oh my. I had forgotten how emotional Trust Me, Trust Me Not is and let me tell you: hearing it as an audiobook (Audible Amazon iTunes) has definitely reminded me of it. Megan Carter‘s narration is top-notch (as always) and she captures both Lacey and Hunter perfectly. Plus if you’d like to listen to the entire Gavert City series (so far) including FEAR ME, FEAR ME NOT – SEE ME, SEE ME NOT & TRUST ME, TRUST ME NOT, it is available as an audiobook boxset as well (Audible AmazoniTunes).

Lacey may have escaped a cult with the aid of firefighter Hunter, but moving on is another story. As theyโ€™re drawn back together on their college campus, will Hunter be able to help Lacey recoverโ€”and find the courage to act on their unspoken feelings?

โ™ฌ You Found Me – Instrumental Pop Songs & Kris Farrow

Those lines are … it’s hard to explain how much they mean to me. I published Trust Me, Trust Me Not the month before my stem cell transplant in 2019 and listening to those words narrated by Megan Carter, they definitely resonate.

We all have scars that haven’t completely healed. They’re part of us. Some are more visible than others.
