#Selfpub corner: Behind-the-scenes of a Facebook release day party

#Selfpub corner button#Selfpub corner is back and today, I’ll be tackling what goes on behind the scenes when organizing a Facebook release day party.

ONE DREAM ONLY is coming out on October 14th. Only a few more days, and you’ll be able to discover Natalya’s life before ONE, TWO, THREE.

You can see (and maybe join the party :)) by clicking on the picture or on this link.

Release day party

For my last book, I didn`t really have the time to organize a release day party but this time around, I decided to go for a Facebook release day party.

And it’s quite exciting. Here are some questions I´ve received and some I came up with…I am trying to answer them as thoroughly as possible, but don`t hesitate to let me know if you have any additional ones.

  • Why did you decide to do a Facebook release day party?

I wanted to find a way to celebrate my release day and to spread the word about my book. I love the fact that it’s online, so that means despite the different time zones and all I can reach out to people around the world. I also have my Facebook Author Page and I wanted to find a way to make it even more interactive. Plus, I like that people can comment, post and be active…

  • What do you do during a Facebook release day party?

That’s a very good question…and personally, I checked out what other authors were doing and then came up with a few things I think would be fun.

Prizes:

Naming a character in my next novel: That will be on-going during the day and I will pick a winner at the end of the day. People will be able to enter by answering a question.

A signed copy of One, Two, Three

Some goodies (a pen, a tote bag, postcards, mouse pad…): I’ve designed those online.

Fun

There will be trivia, character’s quizzes, Q&A session, music…

I worked on a 12 questions quiz where people will be able to discover which character they are (Natalya, Emilia or Becca).

I will be sharing some sentences from my next book.

  • How much did it cost?

Setting up the event: nothing.

The costs of the prizes: so books, the bags, magnets and pen is about $70

  • How did you promote it?

I shared it on my author page, I shared it on my personal page…I invited friends to join. I announced it on Twitter and informed some of the people who liked One, Two, Three.

  • Can I help you with the event?

Yes! If you`re on Facebook, you can join the event, you can share it on your wall, you can invite your friends to it, you can tweet about it, Instagram it…:-)

And then during the actual event, don´t be shy and participate 🙂

You can also share this picture on your social media…

  • Do you think the event will be a success?

Honestly, I don´t know. I also don`t think success means the same for everyone. For me, success will be if people are active, are answering questions, are asking questions…Do I also expect sales out of it? It would be nice of course to see my ranking go up, but my first release taught me to manage expectations when it comes to that. The sales need to be steady, and I am crossing my fingers that people will fall in love with Natalya, will feel right along with her.

Thanks so much for reading and Happy Friday!

Besides writing, I also enjoy taking pictures as you might know. And while, we haven´t yet gone into re-exploring our area, our cat doesn´t mind playing model for me.

Here´s one of my favorite pictures of the week…

What I´m reading

I absolutely loved SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL by Trish Doller. The voice is amazing and I felt so invested in the characters. She is now an instant-buy for me!

I am about to start BLEED LIKE ME by Christa Desir. I bought my copy yesterday!

Bleed like me

What I’m Writing

I need need need to get started…I have written a few hundred words on Monday and yesterday I spent the day running errands, trying to get some of the house hunting and paperwork done…but today, I am writing.

What else I´ve been up to

House hunting, enjoying crab cakes. YUM! We went to this little restaurant in Edgewater and I loved it: the atmosphere and the food!

What works for me

Using the what-if questions…Not too long ago, I sat down and wrote a bunch of questions, just letting my mind go and I found an aspect of Emilia (main character of ALWAYS SECOND BEST) that I had not seen coming.

I can’t wait to check all your posts and see what you’ve been up to 🙂

I will be back…

I will be back

You may have noticed that I’ve been pretty quiet on the blog these past weeks…

As you may know, my husband and I are moving back to the US in….one week. ONE. WEEK. This sounds surreal but it is definitely happening. We’re currently staying at a hotel as all our belongings are already on their way to Maryland.

I am still working and trying to get everything ready both for the move and for the publication of ONE DREAM ONLY (which you can pre-order here for only $0.99)

So…I’ve decided to make the blog hiatus a bit more official…but I will be back. As of October, I’ll have more time and will definitely be more active on social media.

I am organizing a Facebook event for the release of ONE DREAM ONLY to take place on October 14th…would love to see you there 🙂

Hope you’re all doing well and to talk to you very soon again!

It seems like forever since I’ve done a What’s up Wednesday? post…glad to be back.

What I´m reading

I fell into an Abbi Glines frenzy. Ok, maybe not frenzy, but I have been reading a few of her books.
I think they’re addictive.

What I’m Writing

I need to get serious on revising my YA thriller, DADDY´S LITTLE GIRL.
And…I am outlining/researching for the companion novel of One, Two, Three: ALWAYS SECOND BEST.
Which means I am also coming up with a playlist even before writing.

What else I´ve been up to

It seems that the hubby and I might move back to Maryland in October (if all the paperwork goes well).
I quit my job (crazy)
I am trying to prepare, but without having the definite date it is kind of tough. Plus, the hubby is in the US for another project for the month…so…not cool.
I have been doing quite a few interviews and reaching out to bloggers to help promote One, Two, Three. Every review really does count.

I understand why no agents signed me…and they were right.

Anna and the French Kiss

Tomorrow (June 26th) is my official release day.  And throughout the past months, I’ve been doing a lot of self reflection about my selfpub journey.

Results? One very long blog title and possibly, a very long, rambly post. Why? Because I think every publication journey is different, because every publication choice is different, and because in my view there´s no right or wrong answer to some of the questions.

The important thing to remember is to weigh the pros and the cons of each option.

  • Some people decide to go the self-pub route because they do not want to go through the traditional path. It´s a conscious choice from the get go, they decide it at the beginning of their journey.
  • Some may want to have a hybrid career, they want some books, some genres to go through the self-pub route and others to go the more traditional way. Some may have agents. Some may decide that in the middle of their career, some want to build upon an audience they already have.
  • Some people decide to go the self-pub route because they tried querying, they may be disappointed or even disgruntled by the process. For whatever reason.
  • Or, and that’s the case for me, some tried the traditional way, but never got “the” one. They did dream about getting “the” call, but weren’t quite sure how it would go afterwards. They had more questions and uncertainties than answers. They  know their book is good, they know their book needs work, and they think they can be good at the self-pub route. They enjoy the organizational and coordination part. They want the perks of self-publishing and understand what they “lose” in the process. Because, again, each path has pros and cons.

My point here after a rather lengthy introduction is to thank the agents who took the time to read my manuscript, to give me feedback. And to tell them: “I understand why you didn’t sign me. And you were right.”

The book I presented to them was not the book that you may or may not buy tomorrow…It’s similar, yes, but it is very different. The subplots have changed, some characters disappeared to make room for more depth for the others who remained standing. The road of Natalya took a different turn, Camilo and Rita became “real” while before they were parodies of themselves.

Natalya became stronger and weaker, she gained qualities and her flaws became more pronounced. She became “real”.

To make this happened, I went back to my CPs and beta readers notes (THANK YOU AGAIN!) and hired two editors. Both Sara and Maya gave me very detailed feedback on what I needed to do, on where I needed to go. Years before, I didn’t “get” it the first time around, nor the second time, nor the third time I revised ONE, TWO, THREE.

  • I was not ready to kill my darlings.
  • I was not ready to trust my writing.
  • I was not ready to trust my instincts.

Because I knew in the back of my mind that One, Two, Three was not ready when I queried it the first time. The second time back in early 2013, I thought I was getting there.

But why would an agent bet on “someone getting there”? especially after they receive a revised manuscript that is not ready, that didn’t dig deep enough into the characters, that didn’t go under their skins.

Yes, some loved my story, they saw the potential in it, they hesitated, they almost made THE call. But honestly, I’m not sure how I would have handled one more revision at that stage.

Fast-forward to January 2014: when I made my announcement, when I decided to choose my own magic, I was ready. I felt ready. It felt right.

ONE, TWO, THREE went through two very intensive content editing rounds, one intensive copy editing round and one proofreading round.

I loved my story now, I love it even more now because I let myself really connect with the characters. I’m still afraid.

Afraid people may not love Nata & Tonio, may not enjoy their story. But I know, that the story I am putting out there, is a story I am proud of. It is a story that was meant for the self-pub path.

Because going that route meant setting a deadline, meant finally trusting myself.

For fans of New Adult: Discover “More Than Music” (with giveaways)…

Fans of New Adult novels, of music, of reality TV, of fun and sexy novels, of finding yourself novels…MORE THAN MUSIC is all that is more.

This was my very brief review right after reading it: Couldn’t put it down! MORE THAN MUSIC is like Jared to Maddie: addictive, sweet and sexy, funny and real. (and that elevator scene? Wow!)

What is MORE THAN MUSIC about?

From Goodreads.com: Music major Maddie Taylor seems to have her life all figured out. She’s just finished her junior year of college, has a summer internship lined up with the LA Philharmonic, and plans to go to grad school to write movie scores. Only her roommates know she practices guitar every night and secretly dreams of a louder life. But geeky girls like her don’t get to be rock stars.

Tattooed singer Jared Cross has a new girl every week, but when he catches Maddie playing one of his songs, she attracts his attention in an unexpected way. His band needs a fourth member for The Sound, a reality TV show competition—and he wants her. Though Maddie refuses to be another notch on Jared’s bedpost, she agrees to risk everything for the chance to be a rock star.

Once on the show, Maddie discovers there’s more to Jared behind his flirty smile, and with each performance their attraction becomes impossible to ignore. When the show pressures Jared to flaunt his player image, they’re forced to keep their relationship secret, but Maddie can’t help but want something real.

As the competition heats up, Jared will do whatever it takes for his band to win, and Maddie must decide if following her dream is worth losing her heart.

Threats Of Sky and Sea is out today + Giveaway! #TOSAS

Details on the giveaway are at the end of this post

Once upon a time, I took a wonderful revising class with Mandy Hubbard (who is as amazing as everyone says, and she has a cow. That’s not what makes her amazing, but still pretty cool). In this class, I met quite a few talented writers, including the lovely Jennifer Ellision.

Fast-forward 15 months or so, and Jen announces she’s self-publishing the debut novel she was working on in Mandy’s class. Jen’s novel already sounded good back then, and after reading an ARC, I know it’s even better that what I thought! Jen and I have been in very regular contact as we go through the self-publishing process at around the same time. We have behind-the-scenes emails and cheer each other.

But, this doesn’t take anything away from the awesomeness that is her main character, Bree or the way a certain someone is totally swoon-worthy, or the fact that despite the fact that I don’t read a lot of fantasy, I still couldn’t put this book down.

Sixteen year-old Breena Perdit has spent her life as a barmaid, innocent to her father’s past and happily free from the Elemental gifts that would condemn her to a life in the Egrian King’s army. Until the day that three Elemental soldiers recognize her father as a traitor to the throne and Bree’s father is thrown in jail—along with the secrets from his last mission as the King’s assassin. Secrets that could help the King win a war. Secrets he refuses to share. Desperate to escape before the King’s capricious whims prove her and her father’s downfall, Bree bargains with him: information for their lives. It’s a good trade. And she has faith she’ll get them both out of the King’s grasp with time.

But that was before the discovery that she’s the weapon the King’s been waiting for in his war. Now, time is running out. To save her father’s life and understand her own, Bree must unravel the knot of her father’s past before the King takes his life– and uses her to bring a nation to its knees

You can find the book on Amazon, B&N and other online retailers.

Here are a few quotes I loved from the book:

  • “If you tell me one more time that I’m using the wrong fork for a part of a meal, I swear I’ll show them exactly how multi-functional the utensil can be.”
  • “Wishes, I am finding, are fickle things when they turn on you.”
  • “I have been thinking”, he says. Kingdoms have been known to fall in the wake of his thoughts.

 And more!

The speculative fiction magazine Inaccurate realities reviewed it and loved it! 🙂

Tonight, Jen is hosting a #TOSAS Twitter Party, you can find all info here and you can ask her questions by leaving comments on her blog post.

And the giveaway?

Well, today is all about TOSAS and Jen…:) so all you have to do is head over Jen’s Twitter Party blog post by clicking here and ask her a question about TOSAS, her breakfast on this day, about elementals, whatever comes to your mind. Everyone who leaves a comment, asking her a question ahead of time will be entered into my giveaway…I’ll use a random generator number tomorrow to pick the winner of a paperback copy of TOSAS (and I will toss in a $25 donation to the book/literacy project of your choice on DonorsChoose.org)
