Intro: This isn’t your typical how-to guide, because let’s be real—it’s more about the messy art of balancing (or not balancing) self-publishing, creativity, and cancer treatments. I’m publishing this episode on my fifth second birthday (my second birthday was the day I received my stem cells back during my autologous stem cell transplant). And I’ve been in remission for now five years after three years of treatment for refractory Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and while I won’t shy away from the tough stuff (we’ve all cried in the shower, right?), I’m hoping to fill this series with humor, hope, and maybe a bit of awkward laughter.

Erin (from Fear Me, Fear Me Not)‘s word of the year before her story started was:

PERSIST (she was in a “I need to get out of Gavert City” mode especially as doubts about her father possibly being a killer loomed around and her crush on her best friend’s brother seemed hopeless.)

Julie (from # Most Eligible Scrooge)’s word of the year before her story started was:

DARING (she was still reeling from what happened on Christmas Eve and really wanted to believe that she is worthy. And she thought being more daring–including dating her boss’s nephew might be exactly what she needed and starting a fan fiction would help her. Spoiler: while the fanfiction did help her, the boss’s nephew wasn’t all that. A certain growl-y Landon definitely helped her be even more daring).

Maddie (from # Dear Santa With Love)’s word of the year before her story started was:

SPARKLE: Maddie moved to Swans Cove because she needed a fresh start. She felt like her light had dimmed and she wants to sparkle… but sometimes even hundreds of miles don’t solve all problems. Especially when a grumpy certain someone lives in the same building as you. (Start reading # Dear Santa With Love here).

Emilia (from A Summer Like No Other)’s word of the year before her story started was:

DISCIPLINE: Emilia wanted to make sure she became first. At her ballet school at least since she knows she can’t be first in her brother’s best friend’s heart…and for that, she had to be disciplined. But what if she was chasing the wrong thing all along?
