What I´m reading

HOW TO LOVE by Katie Cotugno which I picked up thanks to this amazing review by Katy.

And as mentioned on Twitter.

What I’m Writing

I´m revising. This weekend I finished revising my first 50 pages again.
And…I´ve started working on my query. Thanks again Alison for keeping up with my crazies.
This isn´t the final version but see below what my story is about.

Ever since escaping the town her serial-killer father terrorized, sixteen-year-old Erin Holtz has had one goal: blend in —but keeping her secret gets complicated when she starts receiving death threats.

Erin´s got the fake it ´till you feel it down to a science. Despite the threats, she swallows her fears and plasters her cheerleader smile on her face. Her life soon turns into a nightmare: her Nana dies in an “accident” and a girl from school decides to blackmail her. Even resident hottie and Pulitzer Prize wannabe Malik might know more about her than he lets on. Her father’s claims that there is another killer seem like another plot for attention and Erin doesn’t believe him for one second. After all, she should know, he tricked her into choosing his victims.

However, doubts linger when her blackmailer ends up dead with little angels carved into her face—her father´s trademark. To stop this madness, Erin has to face him and the demons of her past. Otherwise, she might be the next angel to die.

DADDY´S LITTLE ANGEL is a young adult suspense novel, complete at 65,000 words.  I think it would appeal to readers of THE RULES FOR DISAPPEARING by Ashley Elston.

What else I´ve been up to

Almost two weeks ago, hubby and I spent the weekend in Hamburg. We saw Jay-Z in concert and wow, this was really an AMAZING weekend!!!

Book Review, Books

An MG book to fall in love with: SKY JUMPERS by Peggy Eddleman

It´s been forever since I read Middle Grade books. And I have never reviewed one on this blog. But let me tell you something, when I got pre-approved for SKY JUMPERS by Peggy Eddleman on Netgalley, I jumped up and down. See, Peggy was one of the first bloggers I followed and interacted with.

Her blog´s always delightful and she´s so very nice that I thought the blogging community was going to be a great place to be (and I was right!).

You know when you start reading a book and you´re nervous because you want to love it but you´re not sure if you will. Well, as soon as I finished the first page of SKY JUMPERS, all doubts went out of the window. I fell into the story right at the beginning, the characters grew on me and I wanted to know what would happen to them.

What happens when you can’t do the one thing that matters most?

12-year-old Hope lives in White Rock, a town struggling to recover from the green bombs of World War III. The bombs destroyed almost everything that came before, so the skill that matters most in White Rock—sometimes it feels like the only thing that matters—is the ability to invent so that the world can regain some of what it’s lost.

But Hope is terrible at inventing and would much rather sneak off to cliff dive into the Bomb’s Breath—the deadly band of air that covers the crater the town lives in—than fail at yet another invention.

When bandits discover that White Rock has invented priceless antibiotics, they invade. The town must choose whether to hand over the medicine and die from disease in the coming months or to die fighting the bandits now. Hope and her friends, Aaren and Brock, might be the only ones who can escape through the Bomb’s Breath and make the dangerous trek over the snow-covered mountain to get help. For once, inventing isn’t the answer, but the daring and risk-taking that usually gets Hope into trouble might just save them all

Five reasons to love SKY JUMPERS

  • Hope is my kind of characters, she´s trying so hard to be perfect, not realizing that what she sees as weaknesses are seen by others as strengths. Really, there is a moment at the beginning of the book when I wanted to pull Hope into a hug and tell her that she´s special, despite not being good at inventing things.
  • The secondary characters are not secondary. The relationships of Hope with all of them makes them special, and makes them leap off the page.
  • The Bomb´s breath turns into a character of its own – the descriptions are vivid…
  • The adventures. SKY JUMPERS is full of them. Between the bandits arriving in town, the need for medicine, the jumps, protecting their loved ones, Hope and her friends embark on scary adventures. It´s a page turner!
  • Like the name of the main character, this story is full of hope. Hope in people, hope in the world…despite the hardships and all that they´re going through.

If you end up picking it up, I would love to hear your thoughts!

My writing schedule or how to make sure I’m ready for PITCH WARS

Ready. Set. Write! over the summer really helped me get into a writing schedule and I think I need to implement another one to finish this revision.

My goal?

Enter my manuscript into PITCH WARS, which means I have until the end of November to polish it. Last year, I was an alternate in PITCH WARS (with the extraordinary Dahlia) and I learned so much. Plus I met many wonderful writers (read amazing manuscripts!!!).

Submission window is on 12/2

And it’s the perfect contest for GUILTY (or DADDY’s LITTLE ANGEL, I’m still unsure about the title) since I haven’t queried it yet.

To make this happen, I need to sit my butt on the chair (while keeping a balance and not growing a saggy middle–in my manuscript :P)

  • Monday mornings: revise from 5am to 6.15am
  • Tuesday mornings: Jog from 5am to 5.30am – revise in the train to work
  • Wednesday mornings: revise from 5am to 6.15am
  • Thursday mornings: workout from 5am to 5.30am – revise in the train to work
  • Friday mornings: revise from 5am to 6.15am

During the weekends: revise at least an hour on Saturday and an hour on Sunday.

I am allowed to take one day off from waking up early but need to jog at least once a week. With this schedule, I should be able to finish this revision round by November 12th.

November 12th. This should be feasible, no?

Tell me, do you have a writing schedule?

My WiP drives me insane and keeps me sane (and other writerly truths)

This sign now hangs over our computer…

Not too long ago, Katy Upperman wrote a post entitled My WiP is Making Me Fat (& other writerly truths). I loved this post so much, that I decided to make the same type of list.

My WiP drives me insane and keeps me sane. This revision is draining me out and is going sooo slowly. Sometimes, I want to hide away from it  but mostly the entire process keeps me sane. It gives me an outlet, a way to express myself and get lost.

I always feel like my English isn’t good enough…As it’s my second language, I freak out about the small things and second guess myself. All. The. Time.

A few years ago, I posted my first query for my first manuscript on AbsoluteWrite without having researched much. And thought it had to be great. I’ve learned a lot since then.

I want people to fall in love with my characters.

I want to move people with my words.

I daydream about having more time to write.

I don’t outline. But I think I should learn how to do it.

I write in the train during my commute and sometimes wake up at 4.45am to get more writing in.

Sometimes, I ponder about my publishing road, i.e. what would be the best for me?

Not many people know about my writing.

I have the most talented writer friends. Really. They’re amazing.

My writer friends help me stay grounded.

My husband believes in me and encourages my writing. I am so thankful for him.

What are your writerly truths?

Book Review, Giveaway

Rose under Fire – A review and a giveaway

Thanks to Netgalley I received an e-galley of ROSE UNDER FIRE by Elizabeth Wein. After reading it and clutching my heart and fighting back tears in the train, I know that I will buy myself a copy of this book and will give away one additional copy to one lucky reader. The giveaway is open until September 28th and is open internationally (more details at the end of this post).

It tells a story of friendship, of horrors, of hope…

While flying an Allied fighter plane from Paris to England, American ATA pilot and amateur poet, Rose Justice, is captured by the Nazis and sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious women’s concentration camp. Trapped in horrific circumstances, Rose finds hope in the impossible through the loyalty, bravery and friendship of her fellow prisoners. But will that be enough to endure the fate that’s in store for her?

Elizabeth Wein, author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling Code Name Verity, delivers another stunning WWII thriller. The unforgettable story of Rose Justice is forged from heart-wrenching courage, resolve, and the slim, bright chance of survival.

I´ve read CODE NAME VERITY a few weeks back and I enjoyed it – which is even weird to say about a book that describes such a heart-wrenching story but at the same time I did not fall into the story. Maybe it was the time I read it, maybe I was protecting myself. I don´t know.

But this one. This one grabbed me and didn´t let me go. The friendship and the hope shine through. The moments in Ravensbrück are horrific, there is no way to understand though through the eyes of Rose, we also see how some lines are not so easy to trace.

I mentioned in a past blog post that I first stopped reading and paused because there was a character named Elodie in it (and that´s my name) and I know that this was a very rare name in those years. However, this only stopped me for a second. Afterwards, I sunk deep into the story.

Having walked through the gates of Buchenwald while in High School, I pictured some of the places Rose mentioned and the same angst clutched my heart as I read the words as when I passed through the gates where thousands of people died.

I felt like a voyeur to witness the horrors without being able to do anything. As mentioned the friendships and hope offer a glimpse of light in the darkness. Rose manages to find people to hold on, she becomes a person they can rely on as well.

I don´t think I can give justice to this book. Really. How to put into words Rose´s journey and tears, her hope and her smiles, her hearing her friends crying out “Tell the world!” as they go to their death? How to explain her poems, her way of moving forward and holding herself up?

I could see Rose, I could see her nail polish and the contrast of the red against the dirt, I could feel the surge of courage and bravery as well as her fears.

I can hear the words she writes.

Hope is the most treacherous thing in the world. It lifts you and lets you plummet. But as long as you’re being lifted you don’t worry about plummeting.”

Writing to you like this makes me feel that you are still alive. It’s an illusion I’ve noticed before– words on a page are like oxygen to a petrol engine, firing up ghosts. It only lasts while the words are in your head. After you put down the paper or pen, the pistons fall lifeless again.

Reading and remembering are important. We need to continue telling the stories even though yes memory does create histories, they change but the essence stays the same and that is let´s ensure we do not transform anyone into a “it”. Let´s remember the past, let´s pass it on, let´s tell the stories.

I think Elizabeth says it best at the end of the book when she explains:

It has become a false memory of my own – Rose´s dream of the icy wind in the empty bunks is my dream (…) My book is fiction, but it is based on the real memories of other people. In the end, like Rose, I am doing what I can to carry out the last instruction of the true witnesses – those who went to their death crying out: Tell the world.

Tell the world.

And to help tell the world, I´m giving a copy of this book out. If you already have it and you win, just give your copy to a school library.

All you have to do is comment on this blog post. The giveaway is open until September 28th and is open internationally.

revising, What´s Up Wednesday

What´s Up Wednesday? Or how my revision is kicking my butt…

What´s up Wednesday is the brainchild of Jaime and Erin. It´s a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what’s up. Should you wish to join, make sure to leave a link to your What’s Up Wednesday post in the widget on Jaime´s blog.

What I´m reading

I just finished THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR and found it utterly interesting. It also propped some evening discussion with the hubby which is always nice.
I’m reading ROSE UNDER FIRE. And wow. The controller in the train had to tap my shoulder to get my attention I was so into the story. It’s heartbreaking and powerful and emotional. There are passages I want to read with my eyes closed they are so painful and so raw.
There’s someone named Elodie in it and that distracted me for a second. It’s the first time I read a book with my name in it and I know it wasn’t a popular name  in those years.  In the 20s, it was about 40 babies per year which were named Elodie.
But anyways…the name Elodie apart, I cannot stop reading. Despite the horrors, there’s so much hope and friendship in the words Rose writes.

What I’m Writing

My revision is slowly but surely kicking my butt. It takes me forever to revise and I need to make more time for it…This revision involved so much re-writing as I deepened one story-line which is changing a lot.

As it’s been forever I’ve shared something, here’s a little snippet from what I revised this week (not much to choose from since I revised about 50% of a chapter).

“What do you want?” I ask Malik. My voice´s not breaking anymore, there´s a rage inside me I haven´t felt for a long time. I smile at Bo before stepping away from everyone, not even bothering to hold up my dress any longer. I step on it. People scatter away from me.

“What do you want?” I repeat. “Do you want a quote for an article? Here´s the fucking quote, I wish I never kissed you, I wish you and I stayed as far away from each other as possible.”

“You need to calm down.” He takes on that annoying tone, that all-knowing tone I sometimes find irresistible and other times make me want to claw his eyes out.

What else I´ve been up to

Last week I was in Latvia for a business trip. I stayed there from Tuesday to Friday. It was tiring and stressful but also very rewarding. And…I´ve got the best husband ever. Look at the lovely flowers he surprised me with on Friday.

Only 24 hours left to help sponsor a survivor testimonial writing workshop…

Christa is an amazing woman who helps others, who just doesn´t say she will do something but also transform her words into actions.

If you tell her, she will probably reply that there are  people out there who are more amazing than her

I won´t debate amazing-ness, I think amazing is amazing 🙂

Christa makes a difference. Let us help her make that difference by contributing to fund a testimonial writing workshop for survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, and sexual trafficking..

Click this link to find out more:  http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-stories-we-tell

Or you can also read Christa´s own words about it (I copied her past blog post below)

My IndieGoGo Campaign and the awkwardness of asking for money

As most of you know, the plan for my book Fault Line was always to donate 50% of the proceeds from it back to the Voices & Faces Project survivor testimonial writing workshop. Last year, my advance helped to fund a Chicago workshop. But this project and this work means so much to me, I wanted to do more. So two friends and I came up with the idea of doing a crowd funding campaign (via IndieGoGo) to sponsor a rape survivor workshop in New York City.

Okay, it’s one thing to donate your money to something you believe in, but it is TOTALLY different to ask people you care about for money. I mean TOTALLY different. It’s awkward and makes me itch a little bit. I imagine it makes the person I ask it from itch a little bit too. What if they can’t do it right now? What if they already have a cause they support and don’t want to split themselves in two? What if they just don’t have extra cashon hand? What if they’re tired of hearing about rape victims from me? What if they are just overall experiencing compassion fatigue?

Here’s the positive: as of day 5 of the campaign, we’ve raised $1100. This is amazing. I mean SO amazing that I cry every time I see that number. And I cry at every email about new donations (because that $1100 came from the hearts of many, many people). There’s been so much online support and love and RTing this campaign on Twitter, and mentioning it on FB and Tumblr. You have NO idea what it means that so many of you are spreading the word about this.

Here’s the hard stuff: we have a ways to go. And I don’t know rich people. We’re writers, most of our spare money is spent on books or conferences. And I’m grateful that we have 40 days left of this campaign, and I’m grateful that I have two friends doing it with me so I don’t have to raise this huge number by myself. But…$13,900 in 40 days, and it still makes me itchy to ask for money.

I talked to a friend about how hard it was and she said that maybe I needed to remember what I loved about the workshop and talk about that. And maybe then instead of stressing about the awkwardness of asking so much, I could be in a place where I could put 100% of my energy into just appreciating how much love people have shown for this project.

So here’s what I loved about the workshop:
It was two days of reading and writing with a very eclectic tribe of people who all came from different places and who all had one commonality: they were survivors of violence. And in those two days, I learned more about the strength of the human spirit and the bottomless well of compassion than I ever had in my life. I walked out of the door at the end of the workshop knowing that something had changed in me, something had changed in all of us. And it wasn’t just that we knew we weren’t alone, it was more that I knew this was the way to start slowly building an army to take on the seemingly insurmountable task of dismantling rape culture. Being in that room with these incredibly strong people who had not only survived violence but had committed to doing everything they could to stop its perpetuation was like seeing the start of a revolution.

And if you’d like to spread the word about this campaign or if you’d like to help fund it, you can do so here: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-stories-we-tell

I’m so incredibly grateful to each and every one of you. Thank you for listening, reading, caring.
