revising, What´s Up Wednesday

What´s Up Wednesday? Or how my revision is kicking my butt…

What´s up Wednesday is the brainchild of Jaime and Erin. It´s a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what’s up. Should you wish to join, make sure to leave a link to your What’s Up Wednesday post in the widget on Jaime´s blog.

What I´m reading

I just finished THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR and found it utterly interesting. It also propped some evening discussion with the hubby which is always nice.
I’m reading ROSE UNDER FIRE. And wow. The controller in the train had to tap my shoulder to get my attention I was so into the story. It’s heartbreaking and powerful and emotional. There are passages I want to read with my eyes closed they are so painful and so raw.
There’s someone named Elodie in it and that distracted me for a second. It’s the first time I read a book with my name in it and I know it wasn’t a popular name  in those years.  In the 20s, it was about 40 babies per year which were named Elodie.
But anyways…the name Elodie apart, I cannot stop reading. Despite the horrors, there’s so much hope and friendship in the words Rose writes.

What I’m Writing

My revision is slowly but surely kicking my butt. It takes me forever to revise and I need to make more time for it…This revision involved so much re-writing as I deepened one story-line which is changing a lot.

As it’s been forever I’ve shared something, here’s a little snippet from what I revised this week (not much to choose from since I revised about 50% of a chapter).

“What do you want?” I ask Malik. My voice´s not breaking anymore, there´s a rage inside me I haven´t felt for a long time. I smile at Bo before stepping away from everyone, not even bothering to hold up my dress any longer. I step on it. People scatter away from me.

“What do you want?” I repeat. “Do you want a quote for an article? Here´s the fucking quote, I wish I never kissed you, I wish you and I stayed as far away from each other as possible.”

“You need to calm down.” He takes on that annoying tone, that all-knowing tone I sometimes find irresistible and other times make me want to claw his eyes out.

What else I´ve been up to

Last week I was in Latvia for a business trip. I stayed there from Tuesday to Friday. It was tiring and stressful but also very rewarding. And…I´ve got the best husband ever. Look at the lovely flowers he surprised me with on Friday.

Decorating our place. Even though we moved in in April, we still have some boxes so the work is not done.

Quite exciting to put my own photographs as decoration :-)

A lovely brunch with friends on Sunday.
Work. Work. Work.
Working out. I was supposed to jog today but it was raining too much (well my hubby still went but I chickened out). I will go this Friday 🙂 And I did work out yesterday.

What inspires me right now

I can’t wait to check all your posts and see what you’ve been up to 🙂

  1. omg – YOU ARE TOO SWEET!!! I was just so glad to get the blob done and I’m deeply honored that I inspired you this week! Seriously blushing here. 🙂

And man, your hubby is a keeper! Those flowers are GORGEOUS. Also, I can’t get over that zombie pic. Awesome!

Also, that snippet is INCREDIBLE. Get those revisions done, woman! I want to read this story NOW

Good luck with revisions! And have a wonderful week!

  2. The tag line on that book is seriously creepy! 1 in 25 really? Rose Under Fire sounds as amazing and heartbreaking as Code Name Verity. I must get my hands on it.

Great snippet, good luck with your writing this week.

    1. The Sociopath next door is creepy but so interesting! Rose Under Fire was beautiful and sad and hopeful and heartbreaking…

  3. Your mention of ROSE UNDER FIRE reminds me that I *still* need to read CODE NAME VERITY. Still. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. 🙂 I think it’s fantastic that you’re decorating your place with your own photographs. When hubby and I were away recently, I was reminded that I have a lot of great photos that I took on various vacations we’ve been on. I really need to look at framing them and using them for decoration. Yours look wonderful!

I enjoyed the snippet, Elodie! I can’t wait to read this when you’re done revising. Hopefully I’ll have something for you to read, too! I hope you have a great week and that it’s not as stressful as this last week. (Although flowers at the end of a stressful week almost makes it worth it, doesn’t it? :D)

    1. ROSE UNDER FIRE was really heart-wrenching but also so hopeful…I really enjoyed it and cant wait for you to read it so we can swap our notes 🙂 You do have beautiful beautiful pictures Jaime 🙂 You should put them up!

Glad you liked the snippet…cant wait to to read your work again!

  4. Omg I LOVE that zombie poster! That is so mine and Pete’s style. ^^

I love the revision stage because it helps me feel better about what I write but it does go slowly. As soon as I think I’m getting somewhere I think of more things that could be changed. I’m going to have to resist and let the Ready. Set. Write! team put me in the right direction.

    1. My hubby does love this poster zombie (and I do too :))

Im the same as you when it comes to my revision and sometimes I just need to buckle up and continue even if it slows…

Hope youre having a wonderful week!

  5. I’ve been reading a lot about sociopaths and serial killers lately (oh, just some WIP research, la la la…) and it’s so disturbing! I need to read that book. I think the idea of sociopaths freaks me out more than psychopaths even because at least psychopaths are legitimately crazy and hear voices and such. It’s creepier, I think, to kill someone because your neighbor’s dog is a demon telling you to kill than to kill becauase, well, you felt like it and it’s fun and what’s the big deal?

Love that snippet! I’m always a fan of girls telling a crappy guy off. 🙂

    1. Actually the crappy guy isnt that crappy but he did have a crappy moment 😛

Psychopaths and sociopaths are more or less the same thing..based on The Psychopath Test. Have you read it? Its all so scary…I have to say. But does make great research…

If you do read The Sociopath Next Door, let me know 🙂

  6. Don’t you love it when a book totally pulls you in like that… except for all the distractions pulling you back out 😛

Beautiful flowers! Loooove the zombie poster too!

Intriguing snippet. Best of luck as you continue your edit.

  7. I can’t wait to read Rose Under Fire. I cried while reading Code Name Verity but I loved it. Happy revising and good luck on the running. I’ve been trying to run too. Its tricky to fit in but I feel so much better when I do.

  8. Wow, the emotion really comes through in that snippet! Nicely done! Hang in there with the revisions! It sounds like you really have a strong vision for what you want this story to be, and I’m sure all your hard work will pay off in the final product even if it takes a while to get through it.

Also, that bouquet from your hubby is lovely, and so are the photographs you put up! 🙂

    1. Thanks Erin! No idea if that will pay off but I sure cross my fingers it will 🙂 I still owe you a long email with all my thoughts on your novel (and not only the beginning!) how is the querying going?

  9. Latvia! How crazy, great, and exhausting for you. I haven’t read Code Name Verity. I know, there’s something wrong with me, but I definitely plan on it. Revisions really can kick your butt, you just have to kick back! Have an awesome week!

  10. I read a book recently that had (or at least mentioned) a character called Elodie. I don’t remember right now which it was, but I thought of you. I hope it was a nice character… mmm… now I’ll have to try to remember where I saw it! 🙂

Editing’s slow-going for me too, so I feel your pain. But I’m making progress. Even if I only get a few pages done, I’m a few pages closer to finishing. I certainly don’t want to rush the process.

All the best with writing and unpacking this week, Elodie! 🙂

    1. Ohhhh really? Seeing my name in books is always rare 🙂

Good luck with your editing Colin. YOU CAN DO IT 🙂 🙂

  11. I feel like if a revision ISN’T kicking your butt, you’re not doing it right. So… way to tackle that revision, lady! And yes — I am so inspired by Alison and Tracey and Liz and everyone else who has finished their drafts/revisions. So motivating! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Elodie. 🙂

    1. Way to put things into perspective Katy 🙂 Thanks for that! I guess this revision is the best Ive ever had cause its really the most difficult one 🙂 Hope youre having a great day!

  12. Editing can take forever. I can not wait to finish my WIP which I have been working on for far to long and then begin that process. Though I have started doing what I have, mostly as I had an idea to change one aspect it made sense to do some editing to fit that in but now to FINISH! You will get there and that snipit looks great. I love Zombies and decorating and making a place feel like home does help put you in the mood to go into your world to write/revise/do what needs to be done.

    1. Thanks Eve!…I am not even at the hard editing part yet – Im fixing a lot of plot holes. Im sure youll finish that WiP of yours soon!

  13. If it makes you feel any better, I have a first draft currently kicking my butt. Solidarity 🙂

Also, the zombies sign in your house is awesome! I think my roommates and I need to get one of those…
