The making-of A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER – The first 250 words

typewriter in retro style - vector cardEvery book has a story.

Not the story within the pages, but the story outside the pages.

Why did the writer feel compelled to tell the story?

How many hours did the story take to write, rewrite, re-rewrite, revise revise revise revise revise revise?

And how many elements of a story change from the time the writer writes the first words that come to his/her mind and the moment it is “done”? Is a story ever really finished?

Every Thursday, I’ll be sharing something about the making-of A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER – either on this blog or in my newsletter (don’t hesitate to sign-up :)) until its release on July 30th.  Next week, in my newsletter, I’ll not only reveal the cover of A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER, I’ll also explain its making-of (I designed it and I’m so excited about it 🙂

And today, I’m going to start with the first 250 words. Yesterday, I finished revising and editing and re-reading the entire novella and sent it to my copy editor. Then, I thought: “Hmmm, how much did it change from one of the first drafts and this almost-finished version?” It did change quite a bit.

  1. I drafted and rewrote some parts and revised and revised
  2. and then it went off to a first round of beta readers (in this case the lovely and talented Riley Edgewood)
  3. I read her comments and suggestions and revised and revised and re-read
  4. and then sent if off to my second round of beta readers (in this case the lovely and talented Alison Miller).
  5. I read her comments and suggestions and then revised and revised and re-read.
  6. And sent it off to my copy-editor –> I am at this stage 🙂

And below you’ll see the differences between then and now. All the track changes in purple are words/sentences I either added or deleted.

Making of the first page

The “almost final” version of the first 250 words (not yet copy-edited):

The pop music blasts from the speakers so loudly that it resonates within me. I jump once, twice, three times, with my fist in the air and then my hips move to the pounding rhythm.

The mirrors on the wall aren’t used to seeing me dance like this. I usually dance to Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Minkus. Not to Madonna.

I tilt my head to the side. I don’t want to be rehearsing the movements from any ballet choreographies, but I should. I rise on my toes into a relevé.

I don’t want to be Emilia Moretti—sixteen-year-old ballerina who always tries to perfect each single movement to the point of obsession. I lower, bending my knees over my feet, into a plié.

I don’t want to be the girl, who swears she doesn’t care about being adopted but who has been trying to find her birth parents.

I stand on my toes again.

I don’t want to dwell on the fact that I have the saddest crush on Nick—the best dancer at the School of Performing Arts and my brother’s best friend.

I want to let go and dance.

I close my eyes and raise my hands, moving my lips and making up words as I sing off key. I leap from the ground. My legs form a grand jeté that would have me thrown out of the School of Performing Arts: my front leg is not entirely straight, and I’m definitely not high enough in the air. But I don’t care.

(I am sharing exclusive excerpts in my Facebook group: Elodie’s Cozy Nook, hope to see you there 🙂

Tell me, what is your writing process?

Or do you have any questions for me about the making-of A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER?

3DCoverXBT2 (2)A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER (coming out on July 30th):

She’s his best friend’s little sister. He’s the biggest player of them all. They shouldn’t be together. But this summer’s just too tempting.

Sixteen-year-old Emilia Moretti’s goal for the summer is simple: forget her brother’s best friend—Nick Grawsky—ever existed. It should be easy: He’s spending his summer in the Hamptons, adding girls in tiny bikinis to his list of broken hearts. Guarantee he won’t be telling them they’re like his little sisters. This summer, Emilia won’t stay awake at night thinking about him. She’ll need flawless ballet movements to have a shot at next year’s showcase, and she’s finally ready to search for her birth parents. But when Nick decides to stay in the city, Emilia’s resolve disappears in a pirouette. Maybe it’s the spin they needed to be together. As long as she doesn’t get stuck believing in happily ever after…

Nick is tired of pretending to be the happy, let’s-have-fun guy. His father wants him to change his career from professional dancer to…lawyer. He needs to put all of his focus on dancing to prove to Daddy Dearest he’s good enough to make it big. And he may have a case of the bluest balls in history courtesy of Emilia. She’s off-limits: The bro code with Roberto even forbids the dirty thoughts he has about her. Besides, he’s not boyfriend material. He only has time for flings, for girls who don’t expect much, for girls he doesn’t want to kiss goodnight. He knows he should resist her, but he’s not sure he wants to…

At least for this summer.

It’s going to be a summer like no other.

Ready. Set. Write! #RSWrite – 1st update

RSW9

Ready. Set. WRITE! is a summer writing intensive that encourages goal-setting and accountability, and provides an opportunity for us to cheer each other on wherever we’re at with our writing projects—planning, drafting, revising, or polishing. This year, your RSW hosts are Alison MillerJaime MorrowErin FunkKaty Upperman and myself. (For the detailed information about RSW, including  the wonderful buttons created by the lovely Jaime, click here)

And don’t forget, if you’re on Twitter, we check and cheer each other on using #RSWrite

Hope everyone had a wonderful first week!

1.  How I did on last week’s goals.

  • Finish revising A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER by Tuesday night (since on Wednesday, I have pretty amazing plans :)) –> YES!
  • Continue reading on ways to improve my writing & do writing exercises. Learning is great! –> I really love what I’m learning, but this needs to be a continuous goal 🙂
  • Spend a lot of time reading as soon as my revision is finished! (–> after all to write, one must read) –> YES!
  • And run 3 times (twice at least 5k) –> I ran Tuesday and Thursday..but today was way too humid.

2.  My goal(s) for this week.

  • Rewrite the first two chapters of my thriller in 3rd and in 1st to see which one works best
  • Possibly start revising A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER and if not make the revision plan of YOU ARE MINE and revise at least 3 hours a day.
  • Business side of things: detailed business plan
  • Finish reading the book for book club on Friday
  • (and run 3 times this week)

3.  A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised.

“She ‘s more truthful on paper.” (–> a line from A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER)

4.  The biggest challenge I faced this week (ex. finding time to write).

Roller coaster of emotions: one day, in love with my writing and the next, thinking everything is crap.

5.  Something I love about my WiP.

The fact that it’s DUAL PoV and that I get to dig into both Nick & Emilia’s heads. Sometimes, it is also something I hate (see above)

I am SO very much looking forward to reading all about your progress!

Don’t forget to add your update via the linky 🙂

(For the detailed information about RSW, including  the wonderful buttons created by the lovely Jaime, click here)

In short, RSW is a summer long writing intensive through which we write/revise/plan like crazy, cheer each other on, and hold one another accountable with weekly brief updates (to save words for the WiP).

And there are a lot of other fun things planned too!

  • Twitter parties! Katy  (@katyupperman), Erin (@ErinLFunk) , Jaime (@MorrowJaime) , Alison (@AlisonMiller20) and I (@ENowodazkij) will be hosting Twitter writing parties  (feel free to kick-start your own too!)…And our hashtag is….#RSWrite
  • Do you want to be added to the the Ready.Set.Write!2015  list, let me know by tweeting me 🙂
  • Writerly care packages!
  • And at the end of the summer, we’ll be rewarding ourselves with what we call “Manicures and Manuscripts”
  • AND LOTS OF PROGRESS!

And since today, we are kicking things off for the summer…

I’m sharing my goals for next week and what I want to accomplish during the summer (my plans, my dreams…)

My overall goals for the summer?

  • Publish A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER at the end of July
  • Publish translations of ONE DREAM ONLY & ONE TWO THREE in German and ONE DREAM ONLY in French
  • Revise my psychological thriller (New Adult) by mid-July

Are you ready for the Summer? Ready, Set, Write is back :)

I am so excited to be participating and hosting Ready, Set, Write this year. I couldn’t do it last year and I missed it oh so much!

RSW6

(Disclaimer: thanks Alison for drafting this post :P)

Ready. Set. WRITE! is a summer writing intensive that encourages goal-setting and accountability, and provides an opportunity for us to cheer each other on wherever we’re at with our writing projects—planning, drafting, revising, or polishing.  This year, your RSW hosts are Alison MillerJaime MorrowErin FunkKaty Upperman, and myself.

Ready. Set. Write! will kick off with an initial goal-setting post on Monday, June 8th, with the first check-in on Monday, June 15th, and subsequent check-ins each Monday throughout the summer. RSW will conclude on August 31st.

Here are the headings we’ll be using:

1.  How I did on last week’s goals.

2.  My goal(s) for this week.

3.  A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised.

4.  The biggest challenge I faced this week (ex. finding time to write).

5.  Something I love about my WiP.

**As mentioned, Week #1 will only be goal setting.**

Accountability and goal setting are super important, but we don’t want RSW to detract from writing, which is, of course, the whole point of this summer intensive. With respect to our weekly check-in posts, THE BRIEFER THE BETTER. Your hosts will be limiting their answers for each heading to 2-3 lines at most, and we encourage you to do the same. (Save the words for the WiPs!)

Each Monday there will be a linky sign-up on all of the host blogs. Leave the link to your check-in post, hop around to other participants’ blogs, and spread encouragement like sunscreen. (This is a summer writing intensive after all. ☼)

On Monday June 8, we’re going to kick things off with a post of our first weekly goals, and we encourage you to do the same! That day, post your weekly/summer goals, sign up on the linky on one of the hosts’ blogs, and then hopefully have a super productive week. Then, each Monday after that, we’ll post updates using the headings above, link posts to the linky thing, encourage one another, and then . . . MORE WRITING.

We’re SO EXCITED, guys! Just like last summer, we’re going to have Twitter parties (using the hashtag #RSW2015) and giveaways and SO MUCH FUN. And writing. ALL THE WRITING.

And . . .  AND there are RSW 2015 buttons! WE HAVE ALL THE BUTTONS (Thank you, Jaime!) Choose one, choose them all, and use them as your RSW heading. Below, you’ll find a few of them – check out Jaime‘s blog to see ALL OF THEM 🙂

We hope you can join us back here on June 8 for an awesome summer of writing!

(totally late in drafting and publishing this post…my parents just left back to France today and my main goal was to enjoy their visit as much as possible –> mission accomplished)

Currently

Thanks Katy for starting this up again as a way to stay in touch! Today my “currently” post will only have a few of the headers. Did I mentioned how late I was drafting it? 🙂

Loving

The notes Katy gave me on my manuscript. My novel is going to be SO MUCH STRONGER (and creepier)

Making me happy

The past month: the visit of my MiL and of my parents…It was so great to see them all and to have them with us at home. I am sad they left but already looking forward to the next time we see them (in Europe) and to the next time they come visit us…I loved spending lots of time with them and we discovered lots of new places, including an awesome little restaurant which serves amazing crab cakes.

Self-Publishing: D is for…Design (cover design)

DD is for…Design (cover Design): Having an eye-catching cover is oh so important. I think when you’re self-publishing, it really helps to also show that you take it seriously…and while the selfpub stigma is less important than before, a cover is the first glance at your work. Letting it go to waste…is well, a waste.

My cover designer for ONE TWO THREE and ONE DREAM ONLY was Derek Murphy. He offers different packages, and a bit more expensive than others, but I did love working with him…and he has now a lot and I mean a lot of free info for authors, also on how to design covers and templates and everything.

The process took several steps:

  • You first should know if you want to go for ebook and print or just ebook.
  • Sharing as much info about the book as possible
  • Sending a few pictures I had in mind
  • Him sending me a few possible covers
  • Me choosing the one I liked the most (with the help of some lovely friends and writers)) and then amending it also with the help of  Derek

I absolutely loved my covers…Here’s the one Derek created for ONE TWO THREE which I published on June 26th, 2014.

Official cover

For the covers, we used stockphotos. One thing to keep in mind is that you could also use photographer stock photos which then are used only once (check out those photos: love them) or use your own…

For my series, the heart will be “the” image that links all the books…As mentioned in a previous post, I am currently learning how to use Photoshop…and it’s been tons of fun.

Self-Publishing: C is for…Costs

CC is for….Costs. There is a wide spectrum of costs and providers when it comes to self-publishing. And let me tell you something, the costs part is really something I didn’t have down to perfection. As mentioned yesterday, I had a very good day job and in the back of my mind, I dreamed about the positive reception, the way it was simply going to work out.

  • Important Note: Dear Chemical Engineer Husband of Mine, if you’re reading this, do not act surprised, I did tell you and it’s in our tax return
  • Second Very Important Note: I am also sharing at the bottom the costs of other self-published authors who have shared their breakdown on their site and who are awesome, just saying 🙂

The most money I spent on was on editing. Why? Because some of the feedback I received made me rewrite a big part of the story. Hence, I needed more editing than maybe others. And definitely more than what I will need for my next books.

  • Cover Design by Derek Murphy:  $850
  • Editing by Sara Biren, Maya Rock and Double Vision Editorial (content editing x 2, line editing x2, copy editing): $2500
  • Blog tour (cover reveal), Blog Review Tour & Book Blitz: $350
  • Patchwork Press/Netgalley (one month): $45
  • Prizes for giveaways (Gift cards, Donations to DonorsChoose.org): $100
  • Other Promotion and advertising (Facebook, copies of books, ): $500
  • Formatting by Cait Greer: $150

What I’m going to do differently:

  • Cover: I’m learning Photoshop and I will be doing my own covers. Sound crazy…but I think this is really going to work. I always loved taking pictures, I always loved playing around with pictures. I might show you some ideas during this month 🙂
  • Promotion/advertising: I will use Facebook differently, will invest some money on other outlets (like Bookbub, ENT and so on…). The experiment with Facebook for advertising was a definite fail for me.
  • Formatting: I am learning how to do my own formatting too.
  • Editing: I am using only one provider for one book – and my books are I think more ready to go to editing than before. This will bring down the costs. A lot.

In another post, I’ll talk about my actual sales, how I didn’t meet my investment and how this all adds up to my “lessons learned”, and how I still believe in me, in my writing, in my books, in my success.

Self-Publishing: B is for…Business Plan

BOne of the things I had not done properly was my business plan. I wanted to publish and I wanted to make sure it was the best product I could master (with the help of editors and cover designer, and, and, and…) but I didn’t sit down to think:

  • “What’s my big goal?”
  • “How do I define success for myself?”
  • “What will my promotion schedule look like?”
  • “What will be the costs and the possible unknowns?”
  • “What’s my two-years goals, my five-years goals?”
  • “How many books will I be publishing a year?”
  • And so on…

The main reasons I didn’t do this were: (i) lack of time (my full-time job was time and mind consuming) (ii) the main job was definitely providing me enough funds to not worry about meeting my costs, and (iii) did I mention my unrealistic expectations?

Basically, if I want to succeed, I need to start looking more at the business side of things. I will be revamping my business plan and to do this, I have been reading more and more about the topic:  here are a few wonderful articles/podcast that have helped my research:
